When I visited Hawaii for the first time I met a mystical being, Violet Witt, a transgendered person who had tattooed their own face the evening I met them. She sang and offered me a poem which I asked her to repeat and I recorded on my phone. Her poem was in native hawaiian language which I desired repeated back to her and learned. I love native languages and feel the big need to safeguard and document.
I became inspired to create a piece that features the unheard and repressed voices in our society. Especially those of female-presenting people. I created a piece that contains a few of my anthrophonic recordings:Behind the laughter of children playing, we can hear the solemn chanting of a lost Roma woman walking the streets of Barcelona. Violet Witt’s sung poem “All I am is a woman" speaks to the incongruence of being seen as a woman, when in fact what they experience is a far more complex relationship with gender. The last part of the piece is my own rendition of the poem by Witt Naka Naka Oka Aina in which they write of taking action as guardians of Life, in order to heal and co-create a more inclusive world.
